The maximum affordable rent calculator, explained

This rent affordability calculator for Australia uses the long-standing 30% rule: housing is generally considered affordable when you spend no more than 30% of your gross (before-tax) income on it. Australian housing bodies use the same threshold to define "housing stress" for lower-income households.[source]

To work out how much rent you can afford, multiply your annual income by 0.30 and divide by 52. We then compare that weekly budget against modelled median rents for more than 15,000 suburbs so you can instantly see where you can afford to live.[source]

Treat the result as a guide, not a hard limit — your real budget depends on debts, dependants, transport and lifestyle. For personalised help, talk to a licensed financial adviser or mortgage broker.[source]
